Teniola ‘Teni the Entertainer’ Akpata has had one of the biggest years! She has gone from winning the Headies ‘Rookie of The Year’ award in 2018 to getting nominated for the ‘Best Africa Act’ this year at the MTV European Music Awards.
Last night at the MTV European Music Awards, Teni did not win the award she was nominated for but it is very important to celebrate the fact that she even got nominated for the award. In celebration of Teni’s awesomeness, we are checking out all the other nominations she has received this year.
- Headies 2019 Nominations: This year, Teni led the nominations for the Headies and surprised everyone who expected her to be nominated in the ‘Next Rated’ category following her nominations in 2018 for ‘Rookie of the year’. She was nominated for Best Recording of The Year, Best Pop Single, Best RnB Single, Best Vocal Performance (Female), Song of The Year, Headies Viewers Choice Award. She ended up winning in 4 of those categories including Best Recording of The Year, Best Pop Single, Headies Viewers Choice Award, and Best Female Vocal Performance that night. She won the most awards at this year’s headies.
- African Muzik Magazine Award (AFRIMMA): She was nominated in the category for ‘Best Female Artist (West Africa) alongside Simi, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade and her sister, Niniola from Nigeria. Ghana was represented in that category by Becca and Mz Vee, Aya Nakamura represented Mali, Adizoua was for Senegal and Ivory Coast was represented by Josey. She didn’t win the award because Aya Nakamura won it instead.
- All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA): This year’s AFRIMA will hold later this month but Teniola has received two major nominations here. She is nominated in the categories for Best Female Artist in Western Africa and Best Female Artist and duo or group in African Inspirational Music.
- The Future Awards: The 2019 Future Awards will also be holding later this month but Teni is nominated in the only category dedicated to Music. She is nominated in the category for ‘The Future Awards Africa Prize For Music’.
- Soundcity MVP Award: The Soundcity MVP award held January 5, 2019, and considered artist activities for 2018. The award recognised Teni’s activities for last year and nominated her in the ‘Best New Artist’ category which she ended up winning. She was also nominated in the category for ‘Listeners choice’, although she didn’t win the award.
With endorsements from brands like Budweiser, Wema Bank, TomTom, Pepsi and Tecno, and the release of her new ‘Billionaire’ EP; Teni has, without doubt, had a big year, and at the rate she’s going, predicting an EMA win for her in the near future wouldn’t be far-fetched.
