It is a critical season in Nigeria, as we are a little over two weeks to the 2019 general elections. Politicians have begun campaigning for votes and the weeks in recent past have been overwhelmed by political activities.
Part of what typically happens in this season is the act of vote buying; when the electorates are handed stipends by associates of a political candidate in exchange for their loyalty on the day of an election. According to Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), vote-buying is on the increase, and the harrowing act is a threat to the country’s democracy.
This trend is what Nigerian singers, 2Baba, M.I Abaga, Teni, Chidinma, Waje, Cobhams and Umar M Shareef are campaigning against ahead of the elections. “No sell your vote oh, no matter the thing dem dey tell you, no matter how the thing dey do you oh, no matter how much money dem dey give you oh, no sell your vote oh,” 2Baba opened.
