After watching about 80% of the film last Friday, below are four reasons why I will see it again when it eventually hit cinemas in June.

Kunle Afolayan and Kate Henshaw star in ‘Roti’

The Toyin Oshinaike/Faithia Balogun Combo

These two veteran actors combine well as man and wife to deliver a splendid acting performance.

Oshinaike is the street-credible husband who uses slangs and comic relief to effect while Balogun her petty trader in front of the house role beautifully.

Damisire Afolayan’s Performance

Truth is, our industry hasn’t been blessed with exceptional child acting performances over the years. They have been too few and far between.

The late Olamide David is probably the only name that comes to mind if you are trying to remember a recent brilliant child performance.

Seeing Damisire play the quite demanding role of the title character, Roti piqued my interest. Would he swim or would he drown? He swam.

Despite the inhibitions to be noticed, you get the feeling that there is some more precious talent in him than he even brought out in this film. Damisire is one of the reasons I will want to see the film again.

Beautiful plotting of several of the scenes

It has to be said though, not all scenes are perfect. But there were several, especially the ones that featured extras – the school when Roti was being rushed to the clinic, several of the scenes at the place where Faithia Balogun sells her groundnuts – those two were simply beautifully shot. Especially for the later, you can see the extras in the background, going about their business beautifully while the action occurs at the foreground.
