As an icing on a remarkable year, Andy Murray has been voted as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He wins the award for a record third time after his wins in 2013 and 2015.

2016 has been a memorable year for the 29-year-old tennis star who won an Olympic gold medal and claimed his second Wimbledon title.

He also became the world number one tennis player, overtaking Novak Djokovic who previously dominated the scene until this year.

However, Murray was not around to receive the award which was presented by Jessica Ennis Hill and Prince William at a ceremony in Birmingham.

Instead the award was presented to him by Lennox Lewis, the former world heavyweight champion, and was aired live via video link from Florida.

Murray said as he accepted the award that, ‘It’s been a great year for British sport and I am so proud to have been a part of it.’

Triathlete Alistair Brownlee was second in the voting, while show jumper Nick Skelton was third. Long distance runner Mo Farah was fourth.
