Some fortnight ago, Nigerian diva, Yemi Alade became a cake on the tray of disgruntled fans (and ‘non-fans’) as many viciously dissected the singer for assuming herself an African music heavyweight in the same light as fan favourites; Wizkid and Davido.

“The same capacity Wizkid holds down in Africa, I hold it down. The same capacity Davido holds down in Africa, I hold it down – the same venues, we all shut it down, so there is no number one. Why don’t we go ask the promoters, the people who know the numbers?”, she stated during an interview on Hot FM; conveying an idea of being underrated.

Although somewhat true, her claims riled up an argument on Twitter as many discredited her position, backing their sentiments with talks of her music being lyrically deficient. In the words of a Twitter user; “If you have good listening ears you’ll know that Yemi Alade’s music is not that great. I respect her hustle and i think she’s a really amazing singer but her songs… Hell No! She needs a songwriter”.
The narrative that the pop star never puts out music that holds enriching content is one that has become pretty popular. But opposed to popular opinion, Yemi Alade has over the years released a number of records that defy this narrative.
So next time, before joining the bandwagon by referring to her entire discography as trash, ensure to listen to all five songs listed below.
Needful to note; they were all released after her multiple award-winning and record breaking magnum opus, Johnny. You’re welcome.
