The most storied and star-studded music award show in the world; Grammy Awards which held last night amongst many other things was a night of unpleasant surprises.
After the nominees were unveiled in November, the hip-hop community was in high spirits as the culture was very well recognised in the most coveted categories; Album of the Year, Song Of the Year and Record Of the Year with Jay-Z and Kendrick both represented in these categories for their acclaimed projects “4:44” and “DAMN”. They both however lost in all of these categories to Bruno Mars. Mars who was nominated in a total of six categories bagged the award for all his nominations; making him the biggest winner of the night.
Jay-Z who was the most nominated act in the 60th Grammys with eight nominations lost in every category to Kendrick Lamar who was the second biggest winner of the night.
Other notable losses includes Cardi B whose smash hit “Bodak Yellow” lost in the Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance categories. Buzzing newbie SZA who got a total of five nominations lost in all categories including the Best New Act award to fellow newbie Alessia Cara.
Hip-hop fans have already began to express their displeasure, tagging all of these surprising losses as an intentional move by the Grammys to boycott the hip-hop culture in favour of white artistes.
