In a bid to satisfy the wants of Nigerian football fans across the country who have repeatedly clamoured for the Super Eagles to play a top notch country side team, Guinness has decided to appease lovers of the sport by organizing a friendly match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Argentine National football team tagged as Guinness The match.
Guinness The Match presents the opportunity for chief coach Samson Siasia and the Super Eagles to take on the star studded Argentine squad who lie 4th in the FIFA rankings as compared to Nigeria’s 40th position. Get ready to see the likes of Joseph Yobo, Osaze Odemwingie, Mikel Obi and other Nigerian stars slug it out with their Argentine counterparts such as World’s Best Player Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Diego Milito and others.
But it gets better as Guinness is giving the fans a chance for them to take part in this historical event! How? By involving first choice football fans, allowing fans to take part in Guinness The Match in a unique number of ways. These will include being an assistant coach, official photographer, official TV and radio commentator as well as the chance to get behind the scenes, meet the players amongst other memorable happenings.
An exclusive event was held to announce the ground breaking news at The Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. It was attended by the leading figures in the world of football and host of sports personalities. They include Ex-Super Eagle stars Jay Jay Okocha, Victor Ikpeba, Henry Nwosu, Obinna Nwankwo, Bright Omokaro, Steven Okpala, Rafiu Oladipo, Ike Shorunmu, Segun Odegbami, former Bolton Wanderers coach Sam Allardyce, seasoned journalists like Deji Omotoyinbo, Godwin Orume and others.
Host of the event, Ex-Super Eagles player Daniel Amokachi called on the Chairman Guinness Nigeria, Babatunde Savage to give the welcome speech. After which Delvin Hainsworth came up on stage to unveil the new project.
‘Guinness The Match will be a significant game for both sides; both are building new teams and the importance of a major test in the early stages of a squad’s formation is essential not just for the players’ individual development at international level but in laying the foundations for good teamwork’, Sam Allardyce who managed Jay Jay Okocha at Bolton Wanderers commented.
The match also gives both coaches a chance to test the strength of their teams as the Super Eagles prepare for the African Nations Cup 2012 and Argentina for the Copa America 2011.
‘Both teams represent great nations with armies of passionate fans. Guinness The Match will be a challenge for both teams. We are not complacent and intend to keep our 100% undefeated record’, Mr. Hernan Tofoni, Head of International Relations of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) said.
The star match is to played on Wednesday, June 1 2011 at the Abuja National Stadium.
Tickets to Guinness The Match will be available from three sources. Members of Guinness VIP, an online community of Guinness loving football fans, will have the opportunity to win tickets over the coming weeks. Alternatively, you can go to facebook.com/guinnessvip to join. Secondly consumers can purchase tickets at a cost of N2,500 each. Tickets will go on sale in May and full details from where will be announced shortly. Thirdly, fans across Nigeria who buy a bottle of Guinness should text the code under the crown to 1759 to be entered into a prize draw to win tickets to attend Guinness The Match as well as a chance to win airtime, ringtones and unique Guinness The Match wallpapers with a maximum two redemptions per person, per day.
