Countless harsh reactions have continued to trail seemingly derogatory remarks made by Delta Airlines and popular US talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres on the Ghanaian national team.
The airline posted on its Twitter account, a picture of a giraffe (supposedly representing Ghana) and the Statue of Liberty (repping the US) with the actual score line from the USA – Ghana World Cup match played last night (June 16, 2014).
DeGeneres on the other hand celebrated USA’s goal with a tweet, ‘Go USA! Fastest goal in U.S World Cup History in the #USAvsGhana game. 32 seconds! It took me longer to look up where Ghana is.‘
Many have since called the comments and memes racist and insensitive.
‘So disappointing this tweet of yours4people of Ghana, who most likely does know where America is,so sad from U #ShowSomeRespect‘, Twitter user @cmart6444 wrote and UK based Nigerian singer @moelogo added ‘Every1 kindly RT this and let us show @TheEllenShow that yes #USA is winning but we wont condone her sly silly comment about #Ghana 1love‘.
Popular feminist, Mona Etahawy also added her voice, ‘Africa = Giraffes, right? WTF Delta!‘ wrote.
The management of the airline company has since apologised deleting the photo, adding ‘We are sorry for our choice of photo in our previous tweet, best of luck to all teams‘.
Ellen on the other hand is yet to make a formal apology but has deleted the post from her timeline.
The match ended 2-1 in favour of the US.
