It’s not easy to watch but packs a powerful punch: ‘I’m Not Racist’ By Joyner Lucas has been in the conversation for the last two days, owing to the strong themes of racism and black inequality experienced by African-Americans in the United States.
Joyner Lucas is a 29-year-old rapper who took on all the issues currently being experienced in the US. The song starts with a white man in a ‘Make America Great Again’ cap popularized by US President Trump who most black people see as being against them- spitting rhymes that are otherwise offensive.
I’m not racist, I’m just prepared for this type of war…I heard Eminem’s rap at the awards, who’s he fightin’ for?/Y’all can take that motherfucker too, he ain’t white no more/It’s like you wanna be so famous, you’ll do anything for attention and a little payment/I can’t take you nowhere without people pointin’ fingers/Pants hangin’ off your ass, you ain’t got no home training…’
The second verse passes the conversation over to the black man fires back at the white community for their innate racism, police brutality and the use of the word ‘nigger’.
‘You wanna copy our slang and everything that we know/Tryna steal Black culture and then make it your own, whoa,” the Black man raps. “Fuck, I’m exhausted, I can’t even drive without the cops tryna start shit/I’m tired of the systematic racism bullshit/All you do is false shit, this the shit that I’m falsed with.’
The video ends with a hug between the two and a caption that says, ‘We were all humans until race disconnected us, religion separated us, politics divided us, and wealth classified us’.
