J. Cole has dropped his first single of 2019 dubbed ‘Middle Child’. The rapper began teasing the record earlier this week and as promised, he came through.
As the title suggests, the song finds him reflect his status within Hip Hop’s current landscape, noting his role as a bridge between two eras. He also went on to declare he is the greatest right now.
“To the OGs, I’m thankin’ you now / Was watchin’ you when you was pavin’ the ground / I copied your cadence, I mirrored your style / I studied the greats, I’m the greatest right now.”
Cole also dropped a few bars that seemed to have been directed towards Kanye West.
“If I smoke a rapper, it’s gon’ be legit / It won’t be for clout, it won’t be for fame / It won’t be ’cause my shit ain’t sellin’ the same / It won’t be to sell you my latest Lil’ sneakers,” He rapped referencing Kanye’s Twitter rants over Drake’s shots at his Yeezy 350 sneakers.
