When JAY-Z released his latest album, 4:44, one of the few lyrics that caught people’s attention asides him admitting he cheated on his wife, Beyonce, was his revelation about his mother, Gloria Carter, being a lesbian.
In a chat with D’usse Podcast, his mom revealed part of her private life and how she told him about her sexuality.
Gloria Carter recalled when JAY-Z broke down in tears when he first heard she was a lesbian.
‘So I was sitting there and I was telling him one day. I just finally started telling him who I was. Besides your mother, this is the person that I am, you know? This is the life that I lived. So my son started actually, like, tearing because he was like, ‘That had to be a horrible life, ma.’ I was like, ‘My life was never horrible. It was just different.’ So that made him want to do a song about it.’
She told him her life was never horrible, just different, and that inspired him to write a song, talking about how she had to pretend for so long and how much he appreciates despite her sexuality.
