The annual Rhythm Unplugged concert held it’s 2017 edition last night at the Eko Hotel Convention centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. In the usual fashion, it was a star-studded guest list but hopes for a sold-out show went on a drastic drop as a result of the harsh reality that has been playing out around the country in the past 48 hours.
There has been an outcry over fuel scarcity and traffic gridlock. The long queues at petrol stations have extended to the road, causing a jam, the cost of transportation have trippled and commuting especially yesterday was hell.
Even though these setbacks caused the event to kick off well over 2 hours late, it was a totally sold-out show as Lagosians defied all the setbacks and turned up in their thousands for the concert. And yes, it was worth it.
Viral star Michael Dappah also known as Big Shaq was present at the event and he sure treated the fans to some hot sauce. We anticipated that Nigeria’s scorching hot climate would make him take off his jacket, but indeed, the man’s not hot!
Another highpoint was when African pop king – Wizkid joined African pop Queen Tiwa Savage on stage to perform ‘Ma Lo’. It was a moment to behold.
Afterwards, the Star Boy treated the audience to an incredible performance of his recent single ‘Manya’. At the end of his set, the audience screamed for more. They wanted Daddy Yo back… But hey, the show has got to continue. To compensate for Wizkid’s exit, Davido stepped on stage and everything changed (Lol. Wizkid was the appetizer). The crowd went wild! OBO was irresistible. He took the audience back to ‘Da Mi Duro’, blew minds with ‘IF’, and performed other craze inciting hit singles. His performance heightened the atmosphere for the herald of Olamide who brought the roof down with his best tracks. Also wothy of note, Simi delivered a magical rendition of her hit song ‘Joromi’, Small Doctor in his usual entertainer spirit, mesmerized with ‘Penalty’ and Niniola bought the crowd over with her spectacular performance.
While the event hosts; Basket Mouth and Bovi held things at par with their ever-hillarous demeanour, one would really have preferred a female co-host.
Overall, Rhythm Unplugged 2017 was a very successful event, fuel scarcity and traffic couldn’t pull the plug.
