“A solemn patriotic song officially adopted (often) by a country as an expression of national identity”, is how Wikipedia defines a national anthem.
Upon the release of Burna Boy’s acclaimed ‘OUTSIDE’ album, the song, Ye stood out from the project and immediately became a fan-favourite. It resonates, astutely captures the struggle in our nation and carries with it an expression of positivity.
We immediately declared Ye Nigeria’s unofficial national anthem. But it now appears that all along, we underestimated the reach of the record. It is more than a national anthem, it is actually a global anthem and this was proven at the singers just-concluded UK show.
Last night (October 7), Burna Boy headlined the nearly 5,000 capacity 02 Brixton Arena in the United Kingdom and as he attempted to perform Ye, in a patriotic stance, London took over and sang word for word like it’s an anthem of theirs. The crowd owned the song leaving the singer to jump and gaze in excitement.

Ye is not a Nigerian national anthem after all. It is a global anthem and we are not mad about it.
