A Nigerian woman named Victoria Obaeze has become the third Nigerian to be sworn into Mayoral office in the United Kingdom. She then went ahead to break a record and become the first black woman to ever be the Civic Mayor of London Borough of Tower Hamlets, United Kingdom.
Asides from Mrs Victoria Obaeze, the other two Nigerians who have in recent times been sworn into Mayoral positions are Mr Ernest Ezeajughi, and Mrs Kate Anorue, both from Anambra State, as Mayors of London Borough of Brent and Enfield, respectively.
She had initially contested and lost three previous councillorship elections in 2010, 2014 as well as 2016. She eventually succeeded in a councillorship election conducted on May 5, 2018, in Whitechapel Ward.
Her nomination to become the Council’s Deputy Speaker by her Councillor Colleagues put her on a fast track to taking over the mantle as Mayor of London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
