As August comes to an end, these are the songs you should have on your playlist for the week.
1. LadiPoe – ‘Man Already’
Mavin’s rap act, Ladipoe, kicks off our playlist this week. Poe’s ‘Man Already’ has been rocking airwaves since June and this really shouldn’t come as a surprise.
The production is sleek, minimalist and the bars are as clean as can be. Altims did good in this one and we can’t wait to hear more from Poe already.
2. Alessia Cara – ‘How Far I’ll Go’
Disney animation movies have always produce classic tunes that get stuck in your ear. From The Lion King’s ‘He Lives In Me’ to Frozen’s ‘Let It Go’, Disney continues to churn out these iconic anthems and they haven’t disappointed yet.
The latest animation, ‘Moana’, has its own memorable song. Both Auli’i Cravalho’s movie soundtrack and Alessia Cara’s single are brilliant, but it’s Cara’s version that is inspiring us this week.
The combination of Cara’s soaring vocals with the inspiring lyrics form a powerful formula that will make a fan out of you.
3. Ric Hassani – ‘Only You’
As we impatiently wait for Hassani’s debut album, ‘The African Gentleman’, to drop, we groove to this ear candy to calm our nerves.
Ric’s breathy vocals blend perfectly with the breezy strings and calm drums. It’s a welcome change to groove to a song by a Nigerian artiste that has lyrics you can find in the dictionary!
4. Lorde – ‘Sober’
Lorde is back and better than ever! The follow up to her debut album sees the New Zealander redefining pop music in a way that only she can.
Her new album, ‘Melodrama’, gives us some serious hipster, Lana Del Rey vibes (yes, that’s possible!) and ‘Sober’ is the perfect track to tease you into the firestorm that is Lorde’s new album.
5. Demi Lovato – ‘Sorry Not Sorry’
It looks and sounds like Demi Lovato has mastered this whole pop star thing. Yes, it’s the cliché breakup anthem but she sounds so good rocking this overdone formula we can’t help but love it.
The lyrics are quite more explicit than we are used to from the former Disney star but she manages to keep things fun and bubbly on the workout ready jam.
6. M.I Abaga – ‘Monkey’
After seeing Chigul slay in the Nollywood blockbuster, ‘Banana Island Ghost’, and as we wait for M.I Abaga to release his new album, we couldn’t help but get all nostalgic.
‘Monkey’ is an excellent song in every way. It juxtaposes two different forms of production and as usual, M.I’s flow steals the show with Chigul’s hilarious vocals and lyrics not too far behind.
7. The Trybe featuring The Voice All Stars – ‘By Your Side’
It’s a great listen, one which you should definitely add to your music library.
