Over 7000 Swedish fans were in the city of Nizjnij Novgorod when the country got its first World Cup win in 12 years on Monday over South Korea, and supporters apparently enjoying the festivities celebrated so much that the centre of the western Russian city ran out of beer.
The Swedish team got off to a bright start by winning their first game of the 2018 World Cup 1-0 against their Asian opponents, after a penalty from captain Andreas Granqvist ensured that they’re now matched with Mexico at the top of Group F with three points.
Reports say that they travelling fans and supporters managed to drink up most of the beer in the city centre before a ball had even been kicked.
“Yup, some places had already run out by yesterday. The city has never had to arrange something on this scale before, so they’ve been completely taken by surprise,” the Swedish Football Association’s head of security Martin Fredman told Swedish news outlet Sportbladet.
The reports also say that the Swedish fans who had consumed huge quantities of beer before the game were only going to be even more in the mood for a party following their perfect start to the World Cup.
A travelling supporter Carl Eriksson also told local newspaper Russian Corren on Monday following Sweden’s win; “The beer in central Novgorod ran out today after the Swedish success. That alone shows how many of us there are here and the party atmosphere there is”.
