Maleek Berry is the first has started our 2018 right by dropping his ‘First Daze Of Winter’ E.P. While this is exciting news for the music lover inside us, we can’t help but think about other bodies of work that we want to see released this year.
Some Nigerian artistes have already made their intentions of releasing a new project clear to us while others, announcement or not, are simply overdue for releasing a complete body of work . Here are ten Nigerian artistes who we are expecting albums from this year.
10. Mayorkun
Believe it or not ‘Che Che’ singer, Mayorkun, has not released an album yet. Although Mayorkun has dropped hits back to back since he entered the music scene with ‘Eleko’, we would like to hear a complete body of work with those clean vocals and catchy melodies he seems to have loads of.
9. Davido
It is really impressive that Mayorkun’s label boss, Davido, was able to dominate Nigerian airwaves in 2017 without dropping an album or an E.P. throughout the year. We are sure that the ‘FIA’ singer, Davido is going to have an amazing 2018 musically but we hope that a full length album is in the works for him.
8. Tekno
‘Go’ singer, Tekno, was present in some of the biggest moments in Nigerian music in 2017. Whether it was producing Davido’s ‘If’ or collaborating with Wizkid on ‘Mama’, Tekno has clearly proven that he knows one or two things about making good music. It would be great if he could translate this know how into a cohesive body of work.
7. Mr. Eazi
Controversy aside, Mr. Eazi’s ‘Accra to Lagos’ was one of the strongest records of 2017. Can thunder strike twice? Does the ‘Pour Me Water’ artiste have it in him to create another outstanding body of work? Hopefully we will get a positive answer to that question this year.
6. MI Abaga
After asking us to go and ‘fix up’ our lives and calling out our ‘fada’, MI failed to drop one of the many projects he bragged about working on. This is a new year and we are hoping that the rapper fixes up his life and releases an album deserving of all the hype he has created.
5. Wande Coal
We have a bunch of reasons that make us hopeful that this year will be the year Wande drops his album. First of all is the pop candy tune that is ‘Iskaba’. The DJ Tunez collaboration had Coal sounding his best and made us hungry for more. The other reason? Wande announced that he will be hosting his very own concert this year. It only makes sense that Wande drops one or two new jams before taking the stage, right?
4. Seyi Shay
After wiping her Instagram page clean last year, many fans speculated that Seyi was going to pull a Taylor Swift and announce a new album. Alas, that was not what the ‘Yolo Yolo’ singer had in mind. We hope that her latest song, ‘BIA’, is the lead single from a new album.
3. Adekunle Gold
Adekunle Gold has been teasing us with his sophomore effort, ‘About 30’, for a while now. Judging by the breezy jam, ‘Call On Me, and the signature Adekunle Gold tune, ‘Money’, ‘About 30’ sounds like it might be worth all the teasing.
2. Tiwa Savage
Mummy Jam Jam was on fire in 2017. Her ‘Sugarcane’ EP was a beautifully put together collection of songs that gave us one of last year’s coolest jams, ‘Ma Lo’. Before surprising us by releasing ‘Sugarcane’, however, Tiwa promised us a full length album and that she was releasing the EP just to wet our appetite for the real thing. We haven’t forgotten aunty Tiwa and we are holding you to your word.
1. Wizkid
Nigeria’s very own Starboy, Wizkid, announced on Twitter that he is working on a new musical project in Lagos. Although we are not sure which stage he is in the album making process, one thing is for sure, Baba Nla’s album is already the most anticipated release of the year.
