The police in Brazil have decided to put an end to the investigation over Neymar’s rape allegations over a lack of evidence. This does not mean that Neymar is out of trouble just yet as he still has to face a judge who will determine what will happen next.
The fact that they could not find enough evidence over the case was disclosed by the São Paulo attorney general’s office. A spokesman for the attorney’s office told AFP that the police’s decision will be sent to prosecutors on Tuesday, who will now have 15 days to evaluate the case.
The police opened the investigation after a Brazilian model, Najila Trindade accused the footballer of attacking her in a hotel in Paris, France, back in May. Details of this accusation has been covered extensively by the media because of the prominence of the accused. The Paris Saint-Germaine player who has maintained throughout the course of the investigation that he was innocent and was being blackmailed may have been saying the truth all along.
The rape case became public in June when Neymar posted a video of himself saying that he had been accused of rape by the model. He then posted images of Whatsapp texts between him and Najila who had accused him on his social media accounts too. She responded by posting a video that showed an altercation between her and Neymar. She also granted a TV interview where she called the police force in Brazil corrupt and landed herself a defamation suit from them. She was then dropped by multiple lawyers throughout the course of this case.
The final decision on the case that will make it permanently closed will only come after 15 days that the prosecutors will have to review the case and have it brought before a judge.
