Dedicating one hour of the 24 I was blessed with yesterday to #BBNaija, I tell you, was a complete waste of time.
I had watched the show several times previously, but only in snippets. Last night was the first time I would dedicate an hour at a stretch.
And I must say, I regret it hard. I would probably have spent the remainder of the night banging my head against a wall if not for Falz‘s admissible performance. The elimination show lacked life. Like everyone was missing Nigeria already. The show’s host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu was a big factor. He lacked spark and he fumbled with his lines. On a couple of occasions he totally forgot what next he was supposed to say.
The malfunction in the choice of his wardrobe is innegligible. His crotch area was a source for distraction. It wasn’t a pretty sight.
It wasn’t only my eyes that suffered, however. My ears had its share. Most of the housemates hardly had anything interesting to say. Either the sense of humour was left behind in Nigeria or it was evicted even before the show started. A large chunk of what I heard yesterday was both uninteresting and unforgivable.
Jon, one of the two fake housemates introduced yesterday, in a bid to deliver a motivational speech while talking with some housemates said, ‘…2face has a made a mark in Africa. P-Square has made a mark. Wizkid is about to make a mark…’
That was where my chest held me. Wizkid is ABOUT TO make a mark? Wizkid who is arguably the biggest pop music export out of Africa? And he has been top three for well more than two years now. Wizkid who only last night narrowly missed out on a Grammy?
My chest…
Then there were the unscrutinized SMSes. It was so bad even an advert by a local food vendor made its way into Africa’s screen.
Finally, wouldn’t it have been better and make the show seem a little more natural if the housemates didn’t have to wear body microphones? As they did with the cameras, couldn’t they have found a way to hang microphones around the house? I know this requires extra logistics and may perhaps expand the budget a bit but it would have aid the naturally of the show a bit. At a point yesterday, one housemate said to another while they were about to start a discussion, ‘Go and wear your mic.’
Really?
