Hopefully, President Buhari's government will take swift action on the entire country and Obasanjo's concerns.
On Saturday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said that the insecurity in Nigeria caused by Boko Haram has now been multi-faceted with West African fulanization, African Islamization and global organized crimes of human trafficking, money laundering, drug trafficking, gun trafficking. While speaking at another event yesterday, Wole Soyinka also said that Obasanjo’s claims and statements on insecurity should not be handled lightly.
Since it is no secret that Soyinka and Obasanjo rarely agree on national issues, this rare agreement between the two highly respected Nigerians has added weight to public concerns over insecurity in the country. Soyinka, speaking yesterday, said that: “We should be careful not to be too dismissive over the matter. The Federal Government is leaving aside the substance, which is the high level of kidnapping, youth suicide and terrorism in the country.”
The Nobel Laureate also added that while the government may not have liked how Obasanjo worded his statement, they should not ignore the substance of his words. He said, “Obasanjo was calling for a meeting to tackle some the serious issues in the country, including youth suicide. He said there are immediate needs to sit down and discuss these issues. And I am saying there are more immediate needs to do that.”
Hopefully, President Buhari’s government will take swift action on the entire country and Obasanjo’s concerns in order to prevent Nigeria’s security issues from escalating beyond what it’s currently is.
